The Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) updated its ratings last week, giving the northeast Michigan hospital a 5-out-of-5 star rating. It also received a 4-out-of-5 patient survey rating.
The ratings are based on five categories, including safety of care, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, readmission rates and patient experience. MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena scored well in each of the categories, with six out of eight measures reaching national averages. The hospital’s performance in safety of care was the highest of all Michigan hospitals, according to the CMS ratings.
MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena is a 371-bed regional medical center in Alpena, Michigan, about 40 miles south of Saginaw. It has an active emergency department that sees approximately 12,000 patients per year. Its physicians have more than 40 specialties, and the medical staff is supported by more than 150 mid-level providers and a number of physician assistants.
In addition to its acute care facilities, the MyMichigan Health system includes two nursing homes and three community health centers. The system has also partnered with the Mackinac Straits Health System to provide consulting services and to share best practices. The partnership is working well, although plans to purchase the health system’s two critical access hospitals in St. Ignace and Gladwin Pines have been dropped for the time being.
Despite the drop in plans for the acquisition of the Mackinac Straits health system, MyMichigan Health continues to grow and invest in its community. In 2017, the hospital added a new surgical floor to its inpatient facility to replace the existing shared rooms. HCM designed the addition to incorporate a new main patient entrance and improve the hospital’s overall operations. The 100,585-square-foot addition houses 60 private patient rooms, eight labor and delivery beds and 44 med/surg/telemetry beds.
