Located in northeast Michigan amongst vast forests and endless clear water, alpena medical center is the only hospital in the community that offers a full range of health services. The hospital specializes in providing care to the elderly, children and adults with a variety of health conditions and illnesses. The hospital has won many awards and accolades for its superior patient care, including a 5-star rating from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The hospital also receives high marks from patients in the annual ratings by independent patient satisfaction surveys, such as the Leapfrog Group.
The hospital’s 139 licensed beds provide general medical and surgical care for inpatients and outpatients along with a 24-hour emergency department to the Alpena area. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission and features medical specialties such as behavioral health services, cancer care, diagnostic imaging (x-ray, CT scanning, etc), orthopedics, pain management, rehabilitation services, surgery, women’s health and wound & hyperbaric medicine.
Mymichigan Medical Center Alpena has a total of more than 251 physicians and mid-level practitioners serving on the medical staff in 44 different medical specialty areas. The hospital is a Federal Tort Claims Act Deemed Facility and has been approved for Medicare and Medicaid payment. Its total revenue was $254.7 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2023.
The hospital has a number of specialized clinics that treat specific conditions, including the Congenital Heart Center, a joint program with C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, a nationally recognized leader in pediatric cardiology. The clinic offers a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including a board certified cardiologist, that works together to provide comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of congenital heart conditions, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome and transposition of the great arteries.
Other specialized clinics include the Diabetes Center, which provides diabetes education and self-management training for people living with diabetes. The clinic is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and is accredited by the Michigan Department of Community Health. In addition to offering diabetes education, the center offers an insulin pump program and a comprehensive range of services for children with diabetes.
The facility has a physician assistant on staff who practices family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She earned a Master’s degree from Central Michigan University and holds radiology and CT scan licenses. Additionally, the staff includes a registered nurse who specializes in family nursing and a Certified Diabetic Educator who is also a member of the American Diabetes Association. The clinic has a Walk-In Clinic that is available to patients of all ages for common illnesses like fevers, coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections and rashes. The walk-in clinic is staffed on a rotating basis by various healthcare providers including nurses, physician assistants and doctors. The clinic is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. It does not accept walk-in appointments on Saturdays.
