Sleep Disorders Center

Do you sleep like a baby? Many of us do. Some experience the deep, refreshing, peaceful sleep of a calm baby. Others sleep fitfully, waking often and feeling cranky in the morning--almost like a baby with colic. Sleep affects our health, influences our decisions, and guides our daily behavior. It is no mistake that sleep deprivation is seen as one of the most severe and inhumane forms of torture.

The Alpena Regional Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. The ARMC Sleep Disorders Center is staffed by Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and Registered Respiratory Therapists who work closely with a Sleep Disorders Specialist, and is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Take our Sleep Disorder quiz to see if you suffer from a sleep disorder.

If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, the first step is to make an appointment with a sleep specialist – an M.D. or D.O. specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Local sleep specialists include Margaret Moen, and Cynthia Nichols at the ARMC Sleep Center and Dr. Charles Easton at the Internal Medicine Clinic.

After an initial evaluation, the doctor will determine if a "sleep study" is required. If so, you will be scheduled to visit the ARMC Sleep Disorders Center for an overnight visit. During this study, you will sleep in a private room and be monitored by a specially-trained health care professional. Results, along with a proposed treatment plan, will be explained to you within 2 - 3 weeks of the study.

What is a sleep study?
A sleep study monitors your sleep patterns, breathing, brainwaves, eye and muscle movements, and heart rate through the night. You sleep in a private motel-like room with specialized equipment to record your sleep. Respiratory therapists specially trained in sleep medicine monitor the studies.

How do I make an appointment?
The Alpena General Sleep Disorders Center accepts self-referral and physician referrals. Evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders is an accepted medical procedure covered by most insurance policies.

To schedule an evaluation, or just to inquire, call (989) 356-7791 or 1-800-554-8286.
