Alpena Cancer Center In 2001, Alpena Regional Medical Center opened its new full-service Cancer Center in partnership with the University of Michigan Health System. This state-of-the-art facility offers chemotherapy and radiation therapy in one convenient setting. Our partnership with the University of Michigan Health Systems has provided the convenience of local treatment with the assurance of the latest advances in cancer treatment. Bringing radiation therapy to ARMC was ten years in the making but the good news for cancer patients is that they no longer have to endure the hardships of traveling great distances for radiation therapy. During the past year the Cancer Center did 6,500 medical oncology treatments, 5,000 radiation oncology treatments, 3,000 blood draws and had 500 new consults. The Cancer Center in Alpena has saved patients over 1,300,000 miles of driving! The Alpena Regional Medical Center Cancer Program is an approved program by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and a review of its performance.
